IOW Schools Indoor Rowing Champions!

The annual Isle of Wight Schools Indoor Rowing Championships was held on Thursday 2nd February. It was hosted at The Bay CE School in our newly refurbished Sports Centre. 

All secondary schools on the Island took part, bringing together the best of the best. Year group-based teams competed in both an Endurance and Sprint event, with a relay to finish. With a strong reputation in this event, our rowers quickly established themselves as the team to beat. However both Christ the King and the Island Free School did put up a strong contest in the early stages, with some fine individual performances. 

Year 8, Year 10 and Year 11 teams won their age groups, with Year 7 a close second to Christ the King College. 

The overall results saw The Bay CE School crowned as champions for the fifth consecutive year with Christ the King College and The Island Free School in joint second place.

A fantastic performance by the Bay’s team of enthusiastic rowers, several racing on the rowing ergometers for the first time. Strength in depth was always going to be crucial however in the overall championship, and every one of our rowers, gave 100% effort despite the gruelling nature of this event. The support for each other, supporting in every race, was outstanding. The Bay CE came into their own on the final relay events, using a well-drilled strategy, extending their lead to 42 points by the close of the championships!

It was fantastic to host such a brilliant event. Thank you to all of the schools for taking part and for the amazing effort put in by all of the competitors. We are proud of our Sports Leaders for helping to make the event such a success and of course very proud of our winning team!
