Rights Respecting Schools

What does it mean to be a Rights Respecting School?

A Rights Respecting School, is a school that embeds the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC or CRC) in their practices to improve well-being and help all children to realise their potential.

What is the UNCRC?

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, or UNCRC, is the basis of all of Unicef’s work. It is the most complete statement of children’s rights ever produced and is the most widely-ratified international human rights treaty in history.

The Convention has 54 articles that cover all aspects of a child’s life and set out the civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights that all children everywhere are entitled to. It also explains how adults and governments must work together to make sure all children can enjoy all their rights.  See here for a list of all the articles.

In 1989, governments worldwide promised all children the same rights by adopting the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, also known as the CRC or UNCRC. The Convention changed the way children are viewed and treated – in other words, as human beings with a distinct set of rights instead of as passive objects of care and charity.

These rights describe what a child needs to survive, grow, and live up to their potential in the world. They apply equally to every child, no matter who they are or where they come from.

Bronze RRSA

The Bay CE School has achieved a Bronze RRSA: Rights Committed School accreditation. The Bronze: Rights Committed is the first stage of the Rights Respecting Schools Award and the school, across both the primary and secondary sites, will now work towards silver and gold.

The Rights Respecting Schools Award puts children’s rights at the heart of school life in the UK. UNICEF looks for schools to make good progress towards embedding the principles of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child into their ethos and curriculum.

The Award recognises a school’s achievement in putting the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child into practice within the school and beyond. Together, young people and the school community learn about children’s rights, putting them into practice every day. The award is not just about what children do but also, importantly, what adults do. In Rights Respecting Schools, children’s rights are promoted and realised; adults and children work towards this goal together.

UNICEF works with schools in the UK to create safe and inspiring places to learn, where children are respected, their talents are nurtured and they are able to thrive. The Rights Respecting Schools Award embeds these values in daily school life and gives children the best chance to lead happy, healthy lives and to be responsible, active citizens.

Duncan Mills, Executive Headteacher said,

“This is the first step in our Rights Respecting Schools journey. We are now working towards silver and gold accreditation through our continued work on wellbeing, participation, and embedding the United Nations Rights of the Child.

The award helps us to put children’s rights at the centre of everything we do and empowers our pupils to take action on a wide range of issues such as climate change, mental health and bullying.”
