Year 5

A very warm welcome to Year 5!

In Year 5, we have two class teachers: Mrs Wilson and Mr Page. We are also very lucky to have Mrs Saltaformaggio and Mr Mitchell as Classroom Learning Support Assistants, and Mrs Orme and Miss Hayes as specific Learning Support. We all work together to support your children, both academically and pastorally.

We cover a range of topics through our Learning Experiences. Throughout the year, we will be exploring ‘Why was Queen Victoria important to the Isle of Wight?’, ‘Who were the Mangakas’ and ‘What did the Greeks do for us?’. This will be explored through a mixture of History, Geography and Art, and will be taught alongside a range of quality linked texts in our English lessons: Street Child (Berlie Doherty); Kensuke’s Kingdom (Michael Morpurgo); The Mysteries of Harris Burdick (Chris Van Allsburg); Who Let the Gods Out? (Maz Evans); and ‘Percy Jackson and the Greek Gods’ (Rick Riordan). This is alongside a range of short stories and poetry.

In Maths, we will be continuing to use a range of physical apparatus alongside written strategies to help embed children’s understanding of number and place value, calculations, fractions, geometry and measure. As in previous years, Big Maths continues to be used as daily practice.

Whilst Covid restrictions are in place, we will routinely be communicating with parents via telephone and email. As time permits, we hope to soon be able to take the children on trips to support their learning, and these will be communicated via email as soon as we receive confirmation of what is permitted.

To support your child at home, it would be hugely beneficial for them to practise their times table up to X12 regularly, as this forms the basis of most of their Maths work. Supporting your child learning their weekly spellings will also help, and reading with your child and discussing the text is important. Your child will have a Reading Record, and this will need to be signed daily and brought into school so that your child can collect stickers to achieve their ‘Every Child a Reader’ certificates.

We subscribe to Ed Shed and TT Rockstars to help the children learn and practise in a fun way. Your child will have a copy of their login details in their Reading Records. Links to these sites can be found below. Homework will be set on a Wednesday and due in on the following Monday. This will be set via Google Classroom.

We aim to make learning fun for the children, and are grateful for all of the parental support we receive with your child’s learning.
