Numeracy is all around us and we use it in our everyday lives – often without thinking. At the school we equip children with a full range of knowledge and skills to enable them to understand the world around them. In Reception teachers follow the Early Learning Goals of the Foundation Curriculum. In Key Stage One and Key Stage Two Numeracy is taught every day and we teach basic Numeracy Skills alongside problem solving, in line with the National Curriculum and the QCA Framework for Teaching Numeracy.
Teachers use practical equipment, visual images, computer programs and drawings as much as possible to enable children to visualise the maths they are doing. We teach a wide variety of mental and written strategies, eventually encouraging the children to independently determine the best strategy to solve problems.
Children use maths in a range of other lessons and are encouraged to use their growing knowledge at all times.

Maths Challenge – January 2020
Four pupils from Year 4 took on a difficult Maths challenge at Ryde School. Lily Apps & William Spinks made up one team, whilst Amy Crayton & Charlie Westmore made up another. There were 26 schools altogether and the competition was intense. Both teams made minimal mistakes… in the end Lily & William came 2nd – a phenomenal achievement! Amy & Charlie closely followed and gave it their all against tough competition. Congratulations to all; Miss Bird & Ms Lycett are very proud.
How we teach Mathematics – January 2020
In December 2019 we held a Reception and Year 1 Maths Workshop
The workshop was really well attended and parents, grandparents and all the children engaged in the learning opportunities available.
