World Book Day (Secondary) 2000 2000 The Bay CE Secondary School

“I opened a book and in I strode.

Now nobody can find me.

I’ve left my chair, my house, my road,

My town and my world behind me. “

Julia Donaldson

These lines are from one of the poems and fiction extracts students met in every lesson on World Book Day. The poem might be right in saying that when we read, we can shut out the world- but in school on Thursday it was time for the school to share the words we read from the book we love with everyone. Year 7 and 8 students took a book of extracts to each lesson. These included extracts of novels new to the Library and these new additions were soon in demand.

The Library itself, under the charge of Miss Magee, outrageously dressed as Effie Trinket from The Hunger Games, was the meeting place for the 150+ students from all year groups who chose to celebrate their special books by dressing as their favourite characters. Yes, there were plenty of Harrys and Hermiones (and your chances of finding Where’s Wally were high) but most of the best loved writers were also represented from Shakespeare to David Walliams. Creativity and invention meant that from Dorothy and Toto came face to face with Mary Poppins and an eight foot dinosaur.

Many teachers joined in the fun throughout the day; with a more senior Potter meeting up with a Mr. Bond, a Mr Man and a Peter Pan for lunch.  Special mention must be made of the whole of The Cove Team, students and staff, and also of the Year Managers who caused mayhem as Things 1 2 3 4 5 from Dr Seuss.

We wanted to remind ourselves that Reading is fun and it matters. Well done- we did it!

REMEMBER Friday marks the end date of the Bay Big Read. So Year 7s need to hand in those logs, share their recommendations and get ready to see the difference a whole year group “Reading Boost” can make!
