‘Our Skool Nativity’ Production

‘Our Skool Nativity’ Production 2000 1330 The Bay CE Secondary School

This week over sixty Bay students helped to produce and perform in an original production of ‘Our Skools Nativity’ written and directed by the Head of Performing Arts, Mrs Creggwood.

However, this was not a one man band, the students really rallied behind Mrs Creggwood to create an outstanding production. Not only did the students perform, but they choreographed some of the numbers, designed and painted the set, ran the lighting and sound, prompted, did the hair and make-up and manned the entirety of the backstage crew.

The play followed students of St Brutus’ Catholic School retelling their experiences of the previous year. Their Performing Arts teacher, Mr Wrigley, had been left by his girlfriend and had lost his passion for the job. He had some very bad luck with his productions in the past and refused to direct again after receiving -2 stars from the local critic Simon Sparks. Mrs Bevans, the Headteacher, decided that the school should put on another Nativity and that Mr Wrigley should direct it with the help of her niece Toni, an over enthusiastic, under qualified technician. Mr Wrigley, hands tied, auditioned the production with Toni and managed to cobble together a cast. However, nobody wanted to stage what is primarily, a primary school production. With a wave of inspiration, Mr Wrigley wrote his own Nativity and it was a huge hit with the students. However, the governors did not take well to this change and forced him to go back to the old version one week before the first show. Mr Wrigley, Toni and the cast set about rehearsing the new script in secret and put it on anyway to great success! Mrs Bevans, mad at first, loved the production and Simon Sparks awarded it 6 stars!

“It was excellent to be able to give the students these opportunities and I am awed by their resilience and drive to do their best.”

Mrs Creggwood

“the show’s strength really lies in the talent and dedication of the whole cast…In fact, there are far more than six stars in this show – every one of the students (and a couple of teachers!) on stage, and every one of the production team behind it is a star!”

IW Theatre Review

The cast performed the show three times, firstly to one hundred and sixty primary school students, then two evenings to the community. The students performed every show with skill, enthusiasm and comic timing and the audience left with huge smiles on their faces, one saying “I was shaking with laughter throughout”. The cast were complimented for their synchronicity during musical numbers, as well as their ability to change from scene to scene quickly, making the performance fast paced and high energy.

A huge thank you to everyone involved in the production and to the members of the community that came along to support.
