Year 8 Cricket

Year 8 Cricket 2000 1500 The Bay CE Secondary School
This afternoon the Year 8 Girls faced Medina College in the (thankfully) Indoor Cricket League. Evie S (Captain) won the toss and opted for her team to field first. Freya J bowled the opening over – always nerve-wracking when you’re the first one up to bowl, although Freya was showing no sign of nerves at all when, when on her second ball she bowled and then caught out Medina’s strongest player! Captain Evie was up next and she bowled a brilliant maiden over – the Medina team weren’t able to score any runs. Up next was Delilah P. She appeared nervous, or was this just a disguise? Delilah took two wickets, the first a catch by Izzy B and the second a run out. It was Izzy’s turn to bowl the fourth over – and with exceptional execution the Medina girls were struggling to score runs. Jess L – who stepped in last minute today was confident enough to bowl the fifth over and she did exceptionally well – our second maiden over and one wicket taken with a catch by Evie. Chloe W was having a brilliant match as WK and Thea and Alicia performed well in the slips. Sophie T and Charlotte P (who were on the bench for our team) were showing their appreciation and cheering the girls on. Freya bowled the final over and did even better than her first – a maiden over and one wicket taken with a second catch by Izzy. Medina were all out for 29.
Izzy and Delilah were our opening batters – both were confident in hitting the boundary walls and running. Delilah was first to succumb to the Medina fielders, being run-out for 3. Izzy retired at 17 which passed the batting onto Evie and Freya. They were a brilliant batting pair, scoring 2 to 3 runs off every ball. Freya was eventually run-out when they mis-judged their run. Sophie and Charlotte came into bat and suddenly Medina found their rhythm, Sophie being bowled out soon after and Charlotte being caught out. Last up were Thea and Chloe – who only faced a few balls but remained in until the end of the match. The Bay won comfortably and won with grace. Both teams congratulated the other.
Since we had the sports hall booked until 4.45pm, The Bay girls – having now got the “cricket” fever, wanted to stay and play. So we had a game of pairs cricket. Jess and Alicia batted first, notching up 216 runs. Freya and Evie went next and took the lead with 223. Izzy and Sophie (a very competitive pair!!) came in and took the lead with 231 points. Thea and Chloe gave it their best shot, but finished in third place with 222 runs. (For those of you who don’t have much experience of pairs cricket – each batting pair face two overs. They start with 200 runs and lose 5 for every wicket that falls during their two overs). Well done to the Champions – Izzy B and Sophie T!
A special mention to the following girls who stepped in last minute to fill the gaps in our team: Jess L, Thea B, Alicia G, Charlotte P and Chloe W.
I look forward to the Summer Cricket League. Miss Walker
