Heath and Social Care

Welcome to the Heath and Social Care department

Edexcel – Pearson BTEC Level 1 / Level 2 Tech Award in Health & Social Care 603/0395/5

In Year 9, students have the option to study a BTEC Health and Social Care Course.  During the course, students learn about human development from birth to old age, how to decide the health of an individual and how to create plans to support individuals to improve their health and wellbeing. Students will learn how to carry themselves in the field and the values associated with the health and care industry. In addition to this, students learn to manage their own time, organise themselves and develop excellent exam and academic writing skills.  The course boasts excellent results and outcomes for students and enables them to take up further study in Sixth Form, College or Apprenticeships and ultimately supports them into University and the workplace.

Mrs M Shannon – Course Leader

There are three components to the course:

Component 1 Human Lifespan Development:  you will study how people grow and develop over the course of their life, from infancy to old age, this includes physical, intellectual, emotional and social development, and the different factors that may affect them.

Component 2 Health and Social Care Services and Values: This component will give you an understanding of health and social care services and will help you develop skills in applying care values that are common across the sector (some of which are transferable to other sectors that involve interactions with clients or customers).

Component 3 Health and Wellbeing: In this component, you look at the factors that can have a positive or negative influence on a person’s health and wellbeing. You will learn to interpret physiological and lifestyle indicators, and what they mean for someone’s state of health. You will learn how to use this information to design an appropriate plan for improving someone’s health and wellbeing, including short and long-term targets.

Assessment: 40% exam
