Welcome to the Music department

Phase 2 (Years 7, 8 and 9)

Year 7 – Phase 2

In year 7 students are introduced to music notation and begin to develop their understanding of various notation systems and symbols, they learn note positions in relation to both treble and bass clef. The understanding of notation is further developed through performance application on keyboard instruments in order that students hear and see how musical sounds and pitches are represented in a notation format. 

Year 7 students also learn about chord structures, progressions and melodic patterns through the learning and application of various musical scales. A compositional project forms the final topic for term 3 where students are able to apply the knowledge that they have gained during terms 1 & 2.

Year 8 – Phase 2

In term 1 year 8 students continue their musical development from year 7 by building on prior knowledge, studying rhythm, time signature and tempo, again through both notational use and application on musical instruments. In term 2 students will study music sequencing using computer technology and software culminating in a final computer-based composition.

In the final term students will gain further appreciation of various musical styles and genres through both the listening to and performance of a diverse range of musical pieces from Classical, Jazz, Pop and Rock.

Year 9 – Phase 3

In year 9 students develop their knowledge of course requirements for the BTEC first award in music. Pupils focus on the development of instrumental performance skills in order to better prepare them for particular units within the BTEC course. They develop interpretive awareness of given styles along with consideration for articulation and expression, chord structure and more advanced symbol interpretation. Later in the year they study more advanced music sequencing techniques, looking at ‘live’ recording etc. Students also study marketing and promotion along with a detailed exploration of various roles and responsibilities within the music industry. This is designed to better prepare students for further study in years 10 and 11.

Year 10 – Phase 3

Students study the first two units of the BTEC first award in music, focusing on unit 7 – Introducing music sequencing in term 1 and later in the year moving on to unit 2 – Managing a musical product. For unit 7 students are required to use music technology to compose/arrange a musical piece whist developing their understanding of editing, mixing, mastering etc. Their acquisition of knowledge is evidenced through the completion of a unit specific logbook, together with a final presentation.

For unit 2, students must research various marketing and promotional strategies for an online radio station, organising roles and responsibilities whilst producing various associated materials, this unit culminates in a final group presentation, together with logbook evidence.

Year 11 – Phase 3

Students study the final two units of the BTEC first award in music, focusing on unit 1 – The Music Industry in term 1 and later in the year moving on to unit 5 – Introducing Music Performance. For unit 1 students are required to study for an exam on the roles and responsibilities within the music industry, among other things they will learn about promotion, unions, record producers, agents’ royalties and copyright law etc. This unit culminates in a one-hour exam.

For unit 5 students develop their instrumental performance skills through regular, sustained practice and performance, they are required to maintain a logbook of their practice schedule and will be assessed through both their logbook entries and two final performances, one solo and one ensemble.

Where Music can lead to:

Many students who study BTEC Music go onto continue their studies through BTEC Level 3 Music and/or Music Technology at sixth form or college. Some chose to study A-level in Music. Many further this with a Music course at university or training at a Music School. Others choose to combine this course with other Performing Arts subjects in order to complete a degree in Performing Arts or attend Performing Arts school

Performing Arts Extra Curricular

The learning doesn’t end in the classroom, in Performing Arts we offer a range of extra-curricular activities to support our students progress within our subject areas.We offer a range of clubs in order to allow our students to become part of the school community, working as a team with all other year groups. We also offer a range of off island theatre trips each academic year so that our students can fully understand the success that they can strive towards in their own careers.

Clubs on offer

Winter Production – Students from all year groups audition to be part of the whole school production. They can take a range of roles, from performer or dancer, to set designer, lighting or sound technician, costume, hair and make-up and backstage crew. They rehearse twice a week after school.

Dance Festival – This is a club lead by Phase 3 students and starting from term 2, we work as an ensemble perform a piece of dance in the Dance festival that takes place at Shanklin Theatre. Rehearsals take place after school.

Bay Elite – ‘Bay Elite’ is our Dance team. Auditions take place in term 2 and students attend rehearsals once a week to learn a series of routines to perform at various events. Rehearsals take place after school. 

Voices of the Bay – ‘Voices of the Bay’ is our choir club who rehearse during lunchtimes twice a week. They practice a range of modern songs to perform at school events as well as other music events outside of the school. 

Guitar Club – This club offers students help in developing their skills in playing the guitar. We have 20 fully working guitars that students can practice using. This club meets once a week after school. 

Keyboard Club – This club offers students help in developing their skills in playing the keyboard / piano. We have over 20 fully working keyboards that students can practice using as well as a number of pianos. This club meets once a week after school.
