Enjoyment and Discovery
The Bay CE School Library / Study Centre is a delightful space for students to enjoy before school, during break times and after school. Students are warmly welcomed to read for pleasure, satisfy their curiosity, play board games, complete homework or study in this peaceful environment.
There are a variety of board games available for students to enjoy before school, during break times and after school.
Break and Lunch time Passes
Due to limited seating in the library, a pass system is in place during break and lunch time. Students without a pass have the opportunity to use the library before school, after school and during tutor time (with permission from their tutor).
Obtaining a Break and Lunch time Pass
Passes from last year are no longer valid. Each year seven student automatically receives a pass when they start their new school year. A limited number of passes are then offered to years 8, 9, 10 and 11 on a first come first serve basis. Students must come BEFORE school if they would like a pass. Once all passes have been allocated, students are invited to put their name on the reserve list. Students on this list will be informed if a pass becomes available (a pass becomes available if another student has theirs revoked).
If a student loses their pass, they will need to come to the library BEFORE school to get a replacement. If a student is unable to make it to the library before school, they may ask their tutor if they can get a replacement during tutor time.
We have a photocopier and twelve desktop computers in the Library / Study Centre, which students may use for quiet study or to complete homework / print from.
Fiction / Non-fiction
Students have access to an extensive collection of fiction and non-fiction books. The library is organised in the following sections, all clearly labelled for ease of access: Classic novels; Graphic novels; Social Issues; 14+ fiction; Reference Books; Shakespeare; Modern Foreign Languages; English Language; Science; Maths.
The library is open until 4.00pm
Year seven and eight students have regular Accelerated Reader lessons in the library with their English class. Accelerated Reader is a comprehensive reading programme designed to support and encourage the invaluable skill of reading. Students each take a short test to establish their personal ‘Reading Range’, which they use to select books suited to their current reading ability. Each time they finish a book, they take a computer-based quiz to assess their understanding of what they have read. As with any skill, reading needs to be practised, and with practice comes improvement, which is monitored throughout the year.
