Enjoyment and Discovery
The Bay CE School Library / Study Centre is a delightful space for students to enjoy during break times and after school. Students are warmly welcomed to read for pleasure, satisfy their curiosity, complete homework or study in this peaceful environment.
Each student is given a library card upon joining The Bay CE Secondary. The four-digit code found underneath the barcode is their username for Reading Cloud.
Temporary Break and Lunch Time Rota
From the 17th May 2021 the library will be operating a rota for students to safely use the library whilst we move out of our bubbles. Year 7 are invited to use the library during break and lunch times on Mondays, Y8 on Tuesdays, Y9 on Wednesdays, Y10 on Thursdays and Y11 on Fridays. This is a temporary measure and will be reviewed September 2021.
Students can login to the Library resources catalogue via the Reading Cloud app, or via the internet at:
Students can access their account and keep track of their loans. They can renew books that are not yet overdue and search for book recommendations. The following Reading Cloud help sheets can be found here:
Students are encouraged to write a review when they have finished reading a book. Reviews are written via the Reading Cloud app / website and, once approved, they are published on Reading Cloud for others to read. Each week, a Star Review is selected, awarded and published in our newsletter and website. Instructions on how to write a review in Reading Cloud can be found in the Quick Start Guides listed above.
Students can borrow up to three books at a time. Students may renew their books as many times as necessary. The loan period is for two weeks (this doesn’t include school holidays). Books must be returned to library staff so that it can be removed from their account. Students will be expected to replace / pay for any unreturned books when they leave the school.
Fiction / Non-fiction
Students have access to an extensive collection of fiction, non-fiction books and books to support the curriculum. The library is organised in the following sections, all clearly labelled for ease of access: 101 Classic novels; Graphic novels; Social Issues; 14+ fiction; Reference Books; Shakespeare; Modern Foreign Languages; Travel Guides and Books about the Isle of Wight.
Year seven and eight students have regular Accelerated Reader lessons in the library with their English class. Accelerated Reader is a comprehensive reading programme designed to support and encourage the invaluable skill of reading. Students each take a short test to establish their personal ‘Reading Range’, which they use to select books suited to their current reading ability. Each time they finish a book, they take a computer-based quiz to assess their understanding of what they have read. As with any skill, reading needs to be practised, and with practice comes improvement, which is monitored throughout the year.
Accelerated Reader Rewards and Certificates
There are many incentives for our students to aim high during their Accelerated Reader lessons. For a full list and instructions on how a student goes about achieving them, please click here for a link to The Bay CE Rewards and Certificates for Accelerated Reader.
Home Connect is a simple way for parents to track their child’s progress on Accelerated Reader. A letter with login details will be given to each year seven student to take home to parents during the autumn term.
